The 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) is currently underway, hosted by Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda. Nigeria aims to uphold its tradition of fielding many local players, but they find themselves in a challenging Group D, which also includes Senegal, Congo, and Sudan.
After the initial round of matches, Senegal has secured 3 points, while both Congo and Sudan have 1 point each, leaving Nigeria without any points.
Senegal commenced the tournament by defeating Nigeria 1-0. In the meantime, Congo and Sudan ended in a 1-1 draw.
Consequently, Senegal is topping the group, with Congo and Sudan tied on one point each. Nigeria is currently at the bottom with zero points. The upcoming clash between Nigeria and Sudan at Zanzibar’s Amaan Stadium carries significant importance.
A victory for Nigeria would net them 3 points, bringing them in line with Senegal and potentially paving their way to the quarter-finals. However, a draw or defeat could put them in a difficult position.
For Sudan, a win would grant them 4 points and secure their advancement to the next round. Even a draw would keep their chances alive for the final matchday.

Nigeria vs. Sudan CHAN Head-to-Head
Nigeria and Sudan have only faced each other a single time in CHAN competition. That encounter was in the 2018 CHAN semi-finals held in Morocco, where Nigeria triumphed 1-0, thanks to Gabriel Okechukwu’s goal in the 16th minute at the Stade de Marrakech.
This victory enabled Nigeria to reach the final, where they ultimately lost to Morocco, while Sudan finished in third place. Aside from that matchup, Nigeria and Sudan have yet to meet in the CHAN finals.
Likely Lineups
Nigeria (Probable XI): Reports indicate they may adopt a 4-4-2 or 4-2-3-1 formation. Veteran goalkeeper Lawal Mustapha is anticipated to be in goal.
