Nigerian entertainer and comedian Freedom Atsepoyi, widely known as Mr Jollof, has tendered a formal public apology following his much-publicised confrontation with social media critic Very Dark Man during a United Nigeria Airlines flight from Asaba to Lagos.
The incident, which quickly circulated online through passenger-recorded videos, showed the duo engaging in a heated verbal clash that escalated into a physical scuffle mid-flight.
In an Instagram video released on Tuesday, Mr Jollof expressed deep regret over the situation, extending apologies to the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), United Nigeria Airlines, and all passengers who were subjected to the disruption. He stressed that although he acted in what he described as self-defence, the altercation was inappropriate and avoidable.
“I sincerely apologise to the airline authorities, the aviation regulators, and everyone on that flight,” he said, acknowledging the seriousness of the incident, especially given the safety-sensitive environment of an aircraft cabin.
Addressing his family and employer, the comedian admitted that the confrontation did not align with his values or the public image he has built over the years. He assured them—and his supporters—that he is committed to ensuring such an episode does not recur.
Mr Jollof also thanked those who reached out to him privately after the altercation, noting that their concern encouraged him to take responsibility and address the matter publicly.
The comedian concluded his statement with a plea for understanding, expressing hope that the episode can now be put to rest as he works to restore trust and repair the damage caused by the viral confrontation.
The apology comes amid broader discussions about the responsibilities of public figures and the growing trend of online disputes spilling into real-life confrontations.
