Delta Athletes Prepare for Niger Delta Games Trials

With few days to the commencement of the Delta State Trials for the 2nd edition of the Niger Delta Games, athletes across the state have stepped up preparations in a bid to secure places on the state’s contingent to the regional sports fiesta.

A visit to the iconic Stephen Keshi International Stadium, Asaba, as well as other sporting facilities across Delta State, revealed a hive of activity as young athletes engaged in intense training sessions.

From track and field to other sporting disciplines, the athletes were seen sweating it out, determined to make the final list for the trials.

Coaches were also fully involved, putting their wards through rigorous drills and tactical sessions aimed at sharpening skills and improving overall fitness ahead of the trials, which will feature 17 sporting events.

Speaking off camera with our Correspondent, some athletes and coaches expressed appreciation to the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) for providing a platform that allows young talents to showcase their abilities.

They noted that the Niger Delta Games is a vital avenue for talent discovery and development, noting that the competition would help athletes transition from amateur to professional levels.

The decision to stage the Games as an Under-20 competition was also applauded, with stakeholders describing it as a timely move that prioritizes youth development and long-term growth of sports in the region.

The 2nd edition of the Niger Delta Games is scheduled to commence on February 20 at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium, Benin City, Edo State.

The event is expected to feature over 3,000 athletes drawn from the nine states of the Niger Delta, promising thrilling competition and the emergence of new sporting stars.
