NWFL Super Six: Delta Queens beat Confluence Queens 3-1

Oborevwori donates N18m prize money.

The NWFL Super Six contest 2022/2023, holding at the Stephen Keshi Stadium, Asaba, began yesterday, with the host, Delta Queens and Rivers Angels recording victories.

Amidst heavy downpour which made playing turf and the complex slippery, Delta Queens defeated hard-fighting Conference Queens of Lokoja 3-1, Rivers Angels were 2-0 better than FC Robo of Lagos State.

Despite the bad weather condition, Rivers Angels showed class in the first match of the day by pipping FC Robo 2-0 to pick the three points at stake, as Delta Queens brushed aside the challenges from Confluence Queens to win 3-1.

Meanwhile, Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori has donated the sum of N18m as prize money for winners of this year’s NWFL Super Six.

The winner will take home a cash prize of N10 million, while the second-placed team will smile to the bank with a cash prize of N5million. The 3rd placed team will receive N3 million.

The 6 teams were divided into two groups with each group winners proceeding to the final, while the runners up slug it out in the 3rd place game.

Group A comprises women football giants, Rivers Angels, the winners of the league in 2021, Bayelsa Queens the winners of the league in 2022 while Robo Queens, winners of the Betsy Obaseki Cup 2022, make up the list.

Group B has got eternal rivals, Delta Queens and Edo Queens, 2 sides from the old Bendel state with Confluence Queens completing the line-up.

The Women’s Super 6 championship kicked off on Tuesday with FC Robo Queens taking on Rivers Angels by 10.00 am in the morning while Delta Queens tackled Confluence Queens of Lokoja by 4.00 pm.

Edo Queens will be filing out for their opener on Wednesday against Confluence Queens on Day 2 by 10.00 am in the morning as Bayelsa Queens will get their first taste of the battle against FC Robo by 4.00 pm.

Day 3 comes up on Friday after a general rest day on Thursday with the battle of all battles coming up between Rivers Angels and Bayelsa Queens by 10.00 am while another thriller awaits by 4.00 pm with hosts Delta Queens taking on Edo Queens by 4.00 pm.

The 3rd place and final have been fixed for Sunday, 11th June, by 10.00 am and 4.00 pm respectively.

The winner of the NWFL Super 6 will go ahead to represent Nigeria at the West African Football Union (WAFU) Cup, which serves as a qualifier for the CAF Women Champions League.

Among top officials present at the opening day of the NWFL Super Six contest, yesterday, were the chairman, Delta Sports Commission, Tonobok Okowa; former Delta Sports Commissioner, now Vice President, Nigeria Olympics Committee (NOC) Solomon Ogba, President, Aquatic Federation of Nigeria, Chinoye Dafi-Aliu and former Super Eagles defender, Sam Sodje.

The name of the eventual champions of the 2022/2023 NWFL Premiership season will be sent to the secretariat of the Confederation of African Football in Cairo, Egypt, latest on June 12, which is the deadline for registration of clubs for CAF Women’s Champions League.
