Oborevwori: 266,737 Deltans empowered through social programs, approves N15,000 stipend for widows

Governor of Delta State, Sheriff Oborevwori has announced that his administration has empowered 266,737 Deltans through various targeted social intervention programs, addressing economic challenges with a deliberate focus on vulnerable groups.

Speaking during a session at the Delta State House of Assembly, the Governor outlined several impactful initiatives driving inclusive growth across the state.

Key Highlights:

D-CARES Programme:
A total of 247,000 residents have been empowered under the Delta COVID-19 Action Recovery and Economic Stimulus (D-CARES) programme. The initiative was further strengthened by N1 billion counterpart funding for the AUDA-NEPAD partnership, benefiting 2,000 farmers in areas such as food production, livestock, and aquaculture.

Women Empowerment and Skill Acquisition Programme (WESAP):
220 women were trained in vocational skills including fashion design, catering, and more.

Support for Persons with Disabilities:
91 individuals living with disabilities received training in ICT and leatherwork, enhancing their self-reliance and employability.

Working Fingers Initiative:
The programme trained and empowered 2,000 women with practical skills and entrepreneurship development tools.

MORE Grants Scheme:
Financial support was extended to 5,426 petty traders, enabling them to expand or stabilize their small businesses.

MORE Biz-Up Programme:
A total of 2,000 Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) received funding to support business growth and sustainability.

Agricultural Support:
Fertilizers were distributed to farmers across all 25 Local Government Areas to promote food security and enhance agricultural productivity.

In a move to provide sustained relief for widows, Governor Oborevwori approved a ₦15,000 monthly stipend for 10,000 widows under the newly established Widows Welfare Scheme.

“We are committed to improving their quality of life,” the Governor stated.

Governor Oborevwori also announced the approval of the Consolidated Legislative Salary Structure (CONLESS) for workers of the Delta State House of Assembly. The new salary structure, which takes effect from June 2025, follows the review prompted by the implementation of the new national minimum wage.

He expressed gratitude to workers for their patience and commended the House of Assembly for its cooperative relationship with the executive arm, describing the legislature as instrumental to the administration’s success.

Governor Oborevwori reaffirmed his administration’s focus on building a resilient and inclusive economy.

“Our programs reflect a deliberate effort to uplift the most vulnerable and promote shared prosperity,” he said.
