Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, has called for calm and understanding among people in Warri South Local Government Area after reports of growing tensions between the Itsekiri and Urhobo communities.
In a statement released on Saturday through his Chief Press Secretary, Sir Festus Ahon, the governor asked people to avoid actions that could break the fragile peace in the oil-rich city.
He warned that unrest could harm lives and property and also stop the city’s efforts to become a key economic area.
On Saturday afternoon in Warri South, a fight broke out between Itsekiri and Agbarha-Warri (Urhobo) youths over old territorial disputes. The conflict started when some Itsekiri youths held a celebration for the fourth coronation anniversary of the Olu of Warri.
Agbarha-Warri youths tried to stop the celebration, saying the people involved were entering their area.
Tensions increased quickly when the Itsekiri youths started chanting “we own Warri” and “na we get Warri,” which angered the Agbarha youths and led to violence.
Governor Oborevwori said his government is focused on improving infrastructure in the city and stressed that peace is key to achieving Warri’s full economic potential.
“We ask all stakeholders to help us in revitalizing infrastructure in Warri and avoid actions that could end the current peace in the oil-rich city,” he said.
He also asked community leaders, youth groups, and opinion makers to work together to promote unity and peaceful living despite ethnic differences.
According to him, understanding and cooperation among residents are important for keeping progress going under his leadership.
Reiterating his government’s commitment to fair governance, Oborevwori said equitable development would continue across all parts of Delta State. He explained that the MORE Agenda, his administration’s plan, is meant to offer opportunities, build social harmony, and create a better future for everyone.
To ease fears, the governor confirmed that security forces have been sent to keep order and protect the people.
