The Orodje of Okpe, His Majesty Orhue I, has stepped in to halt the controversial amendment to the Sapele-Okpe community constitution and suspend plans to create a proposed “fifth quarter” after tensions rose among residents.
The decision followed a meeting of community stakeholders held at the monarch’s palace in Orerokpe, Delta State. Leaders and representatives gathered there to discuss the growing dispute.
At the meeting, the monarch directed that the alleged amendment to the constitution, along with the recognition of Otonyasere as a new quarter, should be put on hold indefinitely until broader consultations are carried out.
He also nullified the vote of no confidence that had earlier been passed on the community chairman, Onoriode Temiagin, and members of his executive committee.
The move comes after protests from some Sapele-Okpe residents who accused the community leadership of changing the constitution without properly consulting stakeholders.
The Orodje urged the executive members and other community stakeholders to open discussions and work together to restore peace and unity within the community.
