Nigeria’s senior women’s national football team, the Super Falcons, have once again etched their name in African football history, securing an unprecedented tenth Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) title after a thrilling comeback victory against hosts Morocco.
The dramatic 3-2 win on Saturday night in Rabat ignited widespread celebrations and drew effusive praise from politicians..
They include Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, the African Democratic Congress (ADC), former Senate President Abubakar Saraki, and Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah.
The Super Falcons displayed remarkable resilience, overcoming a two-goal deficit to clinch the trophy, a testament to what many leaders described as the unyielding Nigerian spirit.
Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State extended his heartfelt congratulations to the team, hailing their “well-deserved WAFCON victory.”
He emphasised that their triumph serves as a powerful reminder of the heights achievable when “talent, discipline, and belief come together.”
Sanwo-Olu conveyed immense pride, stating that the team’s “flawless 10 out of 10 performance” had once again brought glory to the nation, showcasing the strength and spirit inherent in Nigerian football.
ADC in a statement by his spokesperson Bolaji Abdullahi also joined in celebrating the Super Falcons’ historic tenth continental championship.
The party expressed gratitude to the team for providing a moment of cheer “in these difficult times,” echoing a sentiment of hope for the nation’s resurgence.
Saraki hailed the match and the entire tournament as exceptional. “Our girls have conquered Africa once again! #MissionX accomplished!”
Saraki posted, conveying immense pride in the team’s achievement.
Similarly, Mbah lauded the Super Falcons’ “well-deserved #WAFCON2024 triumph.” He specifically highlighted the team’s ability to recover from two goals down against Morocco.
He noted that the comeback “underscores the resilience and invincibility of the Nigerian spirit and what we can achieve as a people by working together in oneness of mind.”
Mbah reiterated the widespread pride felt across the country, encouraging the team to continue their impressive flight to greater heights.
