Rema breaks Wizkid’s record on Billboard chart

Nigerian singer Divine Ikubor, aka Rema, has broken Wizkid’s record for the longest-running African song atop the Billboard World Digital Song Sales chart.

Rema’s hit song with Selena Gomez, ‘Calm Down’ has spent a record 18 weeks at No. 1 on the chart this week, surpassing Wizkid and Tems’ 2020 ‘Essence’ which spent 17 weeks atop the chart.

Since Rema released ‘Calm Down’, it has continued a steady ascension that has made it into the biggest Afrobeats export after charting in multiple countries.

In the latest installment of the Billboard Hot 100 (Chart week of June 10, 2023), Rema’s ‘Calm Down‘ dropped one spot from its No. 4 highest peak position to No. 5 while extending its stay on the chart to 39 weeks.

With its 39th week on the chart, Rema’s ‘Calm Down’ extends its record as the longest African charting song, as well as the highest-charting and longest-running Nigerian song in the history of the chart.

‘Calm Down’ also debuted at No. 5 on the official Billboard Song of the Summer chart, making it the first African song to appear on the chart.

Rema recently made it to the Guinness World Records.
