Residents Raise Alarm on Illegal Gas Facility in Delta

Despite a stop-work order from the Delta State government, construction is still ongoing at an unapproved Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) facility situated in a residential area along Infant Jesus Road in Asaba, close to homes and a school.

Earlier, residents of Imade Osazee Street and Infant Jesus Academy on the same road had petitioned Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, raising serious concerns about the location of the LPG plant. They warned that placing such a facility within a residential neighborhood and near a school poses significant risks to both residents and students, noting that it fails to meet regulatory requirements. The state government acknowledged receipt of the petition.

In their appeal, the residents referenced the 2025 Agbor gas explosion, which resulted in multiple deaths and the destruction of properties worth millions of naira, stressing the potential dangers of allowing a similar facility to operate in their community.

In response, the state government, through the appropriate agencies, ordered a permanent halt to the construction, citing the lack of the governor’s approval. The Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Renewal, Mr. Sunday Tatabuzogwu, confirmed that enforcement officials had visited the site and warned the operators to stop work immediately or face legal consequences.
