A gang of armed robbers took advantage of a torrential downpour to invade the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) secretariat in Asaba, Delta State, making off with an air conditioning unit and causing significant damage.
The robbery caught NUJ staff and members off guard, as the heavy rain provided cover for the criminals. Staff at the secretariat believe the incident occurred under the cloak of darkness.
Comrade Chochil Oyowei, Chairman of the NUJ Delta State Council, condemned the attack, describing it as “An assault on press freedom and journalism.” He urged security agencies to conduct a swift investigation and bring the perpetrators to justice. “We demand justice and improved security for journalists and media houses,” Oyowei stated.
The Delta State Police Command has confirmed the incident and assured the public that an investigation is underway. Police spokesperson, SP Bright Edafe emphasized, “We are committed to ensuring that those responsible for this act are apprehended and face the full weight of the law.”
This incident has raised fresh concerns about the safety of journalists and media establishments in the state. The NUJ has urged its members to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to the authorities.
