Sheriff Oborevwori Named Governor of the Year

Sheriff Oborevwori, Governor of Delta State, has been named Overall Governor of the Year 2025 by New Telegraph Newspapers Limited in recognition of what organisers described as his outstanding infrastructural strides and transformative leadership.

The award was presented at the 2025 New Telegraph Awards and Dinner Night held at the Ballroom of the Lagos Oriental Hotel on Friday. The governor was represented at the event by his deputy, Monday Onyeme.

According to the organisers, Oborevwori earned the honour for “astonishing even his most ardent critics” with the scale of infrastructural development achieved across Delta State in less than three years in office.

In his welcome remarks, Ayodele Aminu, Managing Director and Editor-in-Chief of New Telegraph, stated that the 2025 awardees emerged from a thorough and transparent selection process spanning major sectors of the nation’s economy. He explained that the awards aim to recognise excellence, accountability, and impactful leadership.

Chairman of the occasion and former Ogun State Governor, Olusegun Osoba, congratulated the recipients and encouraged them to see the recognition as a renewed call to serve the nation with even greater dedication.

Highlighting the governor’s accomplishments, the organisers noted that Delta State has experienced remarkable growth in road infrastructure under his administration. In under three years, the government has initiated more than 3,500 kilometres of road projects and about 2,000 kilometres of drainage construction. Numerous urban and rural communities are witnessing rapid development, with ongoing construction of roads, bridges, and flyovers designed to enhance connectivity and stimulate economic activity.

Oborevwori’s urban renewal programmes have also improved access and living standards across many parts of the state.

Speaking to journalists after receiving the award on the governor’s behalf, Onyeme dedicated the honour to God and the people of Delta State. He described the recognition as a strong endorsement of the administration’s M.O.R.E Agenda, saying it confirms that the government is fulfilling the mandate entrusted to it by Deltans. He added that the award would motivate the administration to accelerate development across all sectors, with more projects set to be delivered in the coming months.

Among those present at the ceremony were Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly, Emomotimi Guwor, Dr. Andrew Oru, members of the Urhobo Social Club, Lagos, commissioners, and other senior government officials.

The New Telegraph Governor of the Year 2025 award is the latest in a series of accolades received by Governor Oborevwori, further highlighting his administration’s focus on infrastructure, inclusive governance, and sustainable development.
