Former Nigeria international Samson Siasia maintains that the Super Eagles still have a chance to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The Super Eagles have faced a challenging qualifying campaign, achieving only one victory out of six matches.
Currently, Eric Chelle’s team is positioned fourth in Group C, trailing leaders South Africa’s Bafana Bafana by six points. With four matches left in the qualifiers, Siasia is optimistic that they can reverse their fortunes.
“Everything is still achievable, but it’s about executing it,” Siasia stated. “Both the players and the coach need to elevate their performance in these matches, taking it one game at a time.”
Conversely, the legendary Nigerian football icon, Chief Patrick Olusegun Odegbami (MON), has expressed a realistic assessment, stating that the Super Eagles’ prospects of qualifying for next year’s FIFA World Cup are ‘very slim,’ though he added that it is ‘not impossible.’
According to reports, ‘Mathematical’ Odegbami’s assessment comes just a week before the September 6th date for Nigeria’s 2026 World Cup qualification campaign to resume, with Rwanda set to visit Uyo for the return leg of a match they lost 2-0 in the first encounter.

On another note, the more critical upcoming match will take place on September 9th, away against South Africa, who currently lead the group with 13 points. Although they face a potential deduction of three points for fielding an ineligible player against Lesotho, they would still remain at the top if they manage to defeat Nigeria.
Odegbami analyzed the pre-match situation and stated, “The reality is that our chances are slim. When you consider the results, the matches we need to play, and the manner in which we must approach them (you will agree it’s challenging).
“Particularly regarding how we need to score, which depends on how others perform, and so forth. All these factors indicate that our chances are quite slim. It’s not an impossible scenario for us, but it will be tough.
