Social Investment Programme, Other Pressing Needs Drive ₦65.5bn Increase in Delta’s 2026 Budget

The need to fund the newly enacted Social Investment Programme and address other urgent sectoral demands prompted the Delta State House of Assembly to upwardly review the 2026 Appropriation Bill by ₦65.5 billion, bringing the total to ₦1.729 trillion.

Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, on Monday, assented to the budget alongside three other bills at Government House, Asaba, after the Assembly passed the revised figure, which exceeded his initial proposal of ₦1.664 trillion.

In a statement by the Chief Press Secretary to the Delta State Assembly Speaker Mr. Nkem Nwaeke, Rt. Hon. Emomotimi Guwor said the ₦10 billion allocation for the Social Investment Programme Law formed a significant part of the increase.

“That provision alone accounts for a substantial portion of the addition, while other sectors were adjusted to meet the critical needs of the people,” Guwor said.

He noted that the revised budget features ₦1.229 trillion for capital expenditure and ₦500 billion for recurrent spending, following rigorous legislative scrutiny and stakeholder consultations.

“What was presented was a proposal. We examined it thoroughly and identified areas requiring urgent intervention,” the Speaker accompanied by Deputy Speaker Rt. Hon. Arthur Akpowowo, House Leader Hon. Emeka Nwaobi, Chief Whip Hon. Perkins Umukoro, and Deputy Chief Whip Hon. Fred Martins, emphasised that the decision was collective and prioritised Deltans’ interests.

“This is about the House and the people of Delta State, not a personal agenda,” he stressed.

The Speaker assured robust oversight, with House committees monitoring ministries, departments, and agencies for strict implementation.

Tagged “Budget of Accelerating the MORE Agenda,” the bill passed third reading after being moved by Hon. Nwaobi (Aniocha North) and seconded by Rt. Hon. Akpowowo (Ethiope East).
