Politician and human rights advocate Omoyele Sowore has urged the international community to dismantle the United Nations, following what he described as the abduction of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro by the United States.
Sowore, who founded the African Action Congress (AAC), made the statement on his Facebook page on Tuesday, where he also called for a boycott of the next United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) session.
Expressing his frustration, the activist said the UN has lost its relevance, arguing that responsible nations should withdraw their recognition of what he called an empty and ineffective body. According to him, any global organisation that fails to curb impunity, aggression, or widespread human suffering no longer serves a meaningful purpose.
His comments came in the wake of a weekend military operation in which U.S. forces reportedly carried out airstrikes on Caracas, the Venezuelan capital, before arresting President Maduro and his wife and transferring them to New York to face charges related to alleged drug trafficking into the United States.
The action by U.S. President Donald Trump has drawn sharp criticism from several global powers, including China and Russia. Critics have accused the U.S. government of acting out of self-interest, pointing to Venezuela’s vast oil reserves as a possible motivation behind the intervention.
