Super Eagles Set for Strategy Session with NFF Leadership

The players and officials of the Super Eagles are planning to meet with the leadership of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) this weekend to develop strategies for the remainder of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers taking place in September.

An NFF official informed The Guardian yesterday that the forthcoming meeting will be held in Lagos, either during or prior to Skipper William Troost-Ekong’s charity event, which is scheduled at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena in Onikan on Saturday.

With the theme “Play for Purpose,” the Troost-Ekong Foundation (TEF) event will bring together some of Africa’s leading figures in sports and entertainment to raise awareness and funds for TEF’s ongoing initiatives in youth development, education, healthcare, and grassroots sports.

However, the anonymous NFF official mentioned that this event would serve as a chance for the federation to discuss the remaining World Cup qualifiers, which the Super Eagles need to win in order to secure a spot in the tournament after missing out on the last edition held in Qatar.

“We met with the players during the friendly matches in England and Russia, but with the majority of the players arriving in Lagos for the Ekong event, the NFF saw it as a fitting time to ensure everyone is prepared for the challenges ahead.

Current standings place Nigeria in fourth position, tied with third-placed Benin, while Lesotho (with six points) and Zimbabwe (with four points) occupy the bottom spots.

Nonetheless, the scenario could change significantly if FIFA decides to deduct three points and three goals from South Africa, who played an ineligible player, Teboho Mokoena, during their 2-0 win against Lesotho in one of the series’ matches.

If that happens, it means the Super Eagles have everything to fight for, as they could move ahead of the Bafana Bafana by winning their last two matches of the series.

In September, Nigeria will host Rwanda and travel to South Africa, followed by final matches against Lesotho (away) and the Benin Republic (home).
