Former Super Eagles coach Sunday Oliseh has stated that Nigerian coaches should take charge of the senior national team rather than foreign ones.
During an appearance on ‘Channels Sports’ on Sunday, the 50-year-old expressed his strong opposition to hiring a foreign coach, emphasizing that Nigeria has qualified local coaches capable of managing the team.
According to reports, the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) appointed French-born ex-Mali international Eric Chelle as the head coach of the Super Eagles in January, following Augustine Eguavoen’s interim period.
Since taking over, Chelle has managed five matches, with the Super Eagles achieving three wins, two draws, and remaining unbeaten.
Oliseh recalled giving national team chances to players like Wilfred Ndidi, Alex Iwobi, and Kelechi Iheanacho, noting that his selections were based on their potential and preparedness for international play.
“I was responsible for introducing Wilfred Ndidi to the national team in the defensive midfield position,” he remarked.

“I also brought in Alex Iwobi and Kelechi Iheanacho, handing them their first call-ups because they showed the necessary talent and skills.” He also expressed dissatisfaction with the practice of benching national team captains during games.
“I view this as a departure from what should be the norm. The issue started when captains were no longer assured a spot in the starting eleven.
It is unacceptable to have your team leader sitting on the bench — it conveys a misguided message. Ultimately, it implies someone else is leading on the field. The captaincy of the Super Eagles is significant in Nigerian football and needs to be respected.”
Regarding the obligations associated with the defensive midfield position, Oliseh highlighted Ndidi’s ability to thrive in that role but emphasized the importance of discipline and clarity of execution.
“To be successful in this position, discipline is vital. You must also work with clear tactical directions,” he noted. “That’s why having a knowledgeable coach is essential.” “In my opinion, the defensive midfield position is one of the most crucial on the pitch,” Oliseh concluded. “You serve as the protective shield in front of the defense — you are their umbrella.”
