Textron Signs Deal to Equip Tantita with Surveillance Drones

Textron Systems, a U.S.-based defence technology company, has entered into an agreement to provide sophisticated surveillance drones to Tantita Security Services Nigeria Limited, the private firm engaged by the Federal Government to safeguard vital oil and gas facilities in the Niger Delta.

As part of the agreement, Textron will supply three Aerosonde Mk 4.7 Vertical Take-Off and Landing (VTOL) unmanned aerial systems to Tantita. The security company is owned by Government Ekpemupolo, widely known as Tompolo, a Niger Delta security contractor and former militant leader.

The Aerosonde Mk 4.7 is an advanced tactical drone designed for intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance operations. Its VTOL capability enables it to operate without a runway, allowing it to function effectively in tight and challenging environments such as creeks, swamps, and offshore areas common across the Niger Delta.

According to security experts, the drones are expected to significantly enhance Tantita’s operational effectiveness, particularly in tackling pipeline vandalism, crude oil theft, and other forms of economic sabotage that have long affected Nigeria’s oil sector.

With the ability to remain airborne for extended periods, the drones can transmit real-time aerial images and data to ground control centres, improving intelligence gathering, rapid response, and security coordination in hard-to-reach locations.

The announcement has generated mixed reactions nationwide. While many Nigerians see the acquisition as a positive step toward protecting national oil assets, others have raised concerns about the growing use of advanced military-grade equipment by private security firms. Supporters on social media have praised the deal as a timely move to curb oil theft and enhance energy security, while critics have called on the Federal Government to enforce strong oversight, clear regulations, and accountability to prevent potential misuse.

Tantita Security Services has been a key player in Nigeria’s oil pipeline surveillance efforts since being contracted by the Federal Government. The company has been credited with helping to boost crude oil production through increased monitoring and enforcement across major oil-producing areas.

As Nigeria works to stabilise output and reduce revenue losses, the introduction of advanced aerial surveillance technology highlights an increasing shift toward technology-driven solutions to protect critical national infrastructure.
