The Horrific State Of Ughelli Stadium

The historic Ughelli Stadium in Delta State has suffered significant vandalisation and unlawful land encroachment. This facility was famously used as a host venue for the 2006 Africa Women Championships (AWC).

The James Ibori administration originally built the stadium for the continental tournament. It was one of four key venues used for the 2006 AWC, alongside stadiums in Oghara, Warri, and Oleh.

On Thursday, the Chairman of the Delta State Sports Commission, Onoriode Oborevwori, visited the complex. This visit was part of his ongoing tour of sports facilities across the state. During the inspection, he discovered that criminals had stripped the stadium of several major items.

Oborevwori described the level of destruction as “disturbing.” Furthermore, he raised a serious alarm regarding the “unlawful encroachment” of stadium land by unauthorized individuals.

“What we have seen here is very disturbing,” Oborevwori lamented. “Public facilities meant for sports development have been vandalised. Additionally, there is clear evidence of encroachment on government land.”

The Ughelli Stadium holds a special place in Nigerian sports history. It played a vital role in hosting Africa’s best female footballers nearly two decades ago. However, the current state of the facility suggests a period of neglect that has allowed vandals to thrive.

The Chairman condemned the rate of decay. He emphasized that these facilities belong to the public and are essential for the growth of local athletes. Consequently, the state government is now looking for ways to secure the perimeter and restore the equipment.

To address the crisis, Oborevwori has taken immediate action. He directed a staff member of the Commission, Mr. Omonigho Johnson, to prepare a comprehensive report on the stadium’s condition.

This report will document every vandalised item and identify specific areas of land encroachment. The findings will then serve as a guide for immediate government intervention.

“We need a detailed report without delay,” the Chairman stated. “This will allow us to take decisive steps to protect and restore this stadium.”

By taking these steps, the Delta State Sports Commission aims to reclaim the Ughelli Stadium and return it to its former glory. Stakeholders hope that these measures will prevent further damage to the state’s sporting infrastructure.
