The Delta State Sports Commission has announced the suspension of Warri Wolves’ Head Coach, Napoleon Aluma, marking the first managerial casualty of the 2025/26 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) season.
In an official statement signed by the Commission’s spokesperson, Okonma Franka, Aluma’s suspension took effect immediately after Wolves’ disappointing defeat to Shooting Stars in Ozoro.
The coach, who only a few months ago guided the Seasiders back into Nigeria’s top-flight league from the Nigeria National League (NNL), has now been directed to hand over all documents and responsibilities to his assistant, Johnny Austin, who will serve as interim manager.
Aluma had entered the new season with high expectations, especially after leading the Wolves to back-to-back clean sheets in their opening fixtures a run he celebrated with a thanksgiving service. However, recent performances fell short of the Commission’s expectations, prompting swift action to avert further setbacks.
Despite the decision, officials acknowledged Aluma’s achievements, particularly securing promotion for the Wolves after years in the lower division.
“It is on record that Coach Aluma restored pride to Warri Wolves by winning the NNL and bringing the club back to the NPFL. But recent results made this decision unavoidable,” the statement read.
As the search for a permanent replacement begins, former NPFL title-winning coach Kennedy Boboye is among those being considered for the role. In the meantime, Austin will lead the team to Kano this week, where they face Barau FC in what is expected to be a critical test for the side.
The Commission reassured fans and stakeholders of its commitment to “repositioning Warri Wolves for improved performance and sustainable success” as the club looks to stabilize its season.
