A late-night armed robbery in the Ekredjebor area of Ughelli, Delta State, has sparked renewed concern over rising criminal activity in the community, after five suspected robbers invaded a private residence, shot two individuals, and made away with valuables.
The incident, which occurred Tuesday night at a residence behind Winners Street, NEPA Quarters involved a coordinated attack in which the armed men first confronted local security.
According to eyewitness accounts, the gang shot a vigilante on duty and killed the home’s security dog before attempting to force entry into the building.
When efforts to break down the main door failed, the robbers allegedly gained access by cutting through and crawling in through the POP ceiling, leaving significant structural damage.
Once inside, the attackers shot a resident in the leg and reportedly ransacked the home for several hours, stealing mobile phones and other personal belongings before fleeing the scene.
The two injured victims are currently receiving medical treatment at the hospital.
Residents who inspected the building after the attack described the scene as distressing and called for increased police patrols and quicker response systems in the area, citing fears of escalating insecurity.
This latest incident comes amid broader concerns about a rise in armed robbery cases in Ughelli and surrounding communities.
In recent months, the Delta State Police Command has announced multiple arrests and weapons recoveries linked to robbery syndicates operating in the region.
However, residents say more needs to be done to deter violent attacks and protect neighborhoods.
The Delta State Police Command is yet to issue an official statement.
