Coalition Calls on Delta State to Increase Support for Rural and Riverine Schools

The Civil Society Action Coalition on Education for All (CSACEFA), Delta State, has called for increased funding and targeted programs to enhance access to quality education in the state’s rural and riverine communities.

Juliana Nzemeka, Delta State Coordinator of the coalition, made the appeal in Asaba during a press conference marking the group’s 25th anniversary.

Describing education as a fundamental right and a key tool for breaking the cycle of poverty, Mrs. Nzemeka highlighted that many children in rural and riverine areas remain out of school, missing out on opportunities to learn, grow, and thrive.

She noted that these challenges are often worsened by shortages of teachers, classrooms, learning materials, and basic sanitation facilities, which hinder school attendance and negatively impact the quality of learning.

The Delta State Coordinator of the Civil Society Action Coalition on Education for All noted that the coalition works closely with the National Commission for the Almajiri and Out-of-School Children to identify and support vulnerable children across the state.

She also commended Governor Sheriff Oborevwori for his administration’s ongoing investment in education, particularly the disbursement of bursaries to 30,116 students in 2023 and 32,028 students in 2024.

Speaking on the anniversary theme, “Sustaining the Vision: Advancing Advocacy and Civil Society Mobilization,” she emphasized that it reflects CSACEFA’s ongoing commitment to ensuring quality, equitable, and inclusive education through collective action, policy advocacy, and community engagement.

CSACEFA remains dedicated to collaborating with government, development partners, and communities to advance inclusive education. The coalition is proud to partner with initiatives such as Education Out Loud (managed by Oxfam IBIS), the Global Partnership for Education (GPE), and the Malala Fund Education Champions, all aligned with its vision of providing quality education for every child in Delta State and across Nigeria.

As part of its advocacy efforts, the coalition also organized a road walk from the Delta State Secretariat to the NUJ Press Centre in Asaba to raise public awareness about its programs and policies.
