In a bid to revolutionize teacher training, the Delta State House of Assembly has approved the introduction of a dual-mode program in the state’s Colleges of Education.
The initiative which allows students to earn both the Nigeria Certificate in Education (NCE) and a bachelor’s degree concurrently, eliminates the reliance on external university affiliations.
Delta State Commissioner for Higher Education, Professor Nyerhovwo Tonukari hailed the approval as a significant stride in higher education reform which promises greater access, innovation, and efficiency in preparing educators for the future.
Professor Tonukari lauded the Assembly’s legislative foresight and commitment to educational progress and singled out the Chairman of the House Committee on Education, Hon. Charles Emetulu for his pivotal role in steering the bill to passage, calling the program a “game-changer” for Delta’s education landscape.
“This progressive and dynamic initiative will make our Colleges of Education more competitive and attractive, while offering students the opportunity to pursue their academic goals in a more efficient and affordable manner,” Prof. Tonukari stated.
He stated that the move aligns with Governor Sheriff Oborevwori’s MORE Agenda, which emphasizes education, human capital development, and institutional reforms.
“My appreciation goes to the members of the Delta State House of Assembly for their collective effort in making this law a reality. You are true champions of education, and your visionary leadership is shaping the future of our state,” the commissioner added.
With this approval, Delta State positions itself at the forefront of educational advancement, potentially setting a model for other regions in Nigeria.
Implementation details are expected to follow as the colleges gear up for the dual-degree rollout.
