The Delta State Government has successfully graduated 51 Chief Drivers and Operatives from the 2024/2025 Training Programme, showing its continued dedication to supporting and developing the skills of drivers within the State Public Service.
The graduation ceremony took place at the Ministry of Transport Conference Hall in Asaba, Delta State and was attended by senior officials from the Directorate of Transport. Among them was the Hon. Commissioner, Mr. Onoriode Agofure, who was represented by the Acting Permanent Secretary, Engr. Victor Omoniyi.
Agofure explained that the six-month training was created to equip Chief Drivers and Operatives on Salary Grade Level 07 with the skills needed to transition into the Works Superintendent Cadre and to get them ready for increased responsibilities within the service.
He congratulated the 51 graduates for their determination and dedication, especially given the economic difficulties caused by the removal of the fuel subsidy. He also highlighted that the program has been consistently running since it started in 2006, with a total of 1,158 public service drivers benefiting so far.
The Commissioner praised Governor Sheriff Oborevwori for putting the welfare of drivers first and revealed that the Governor has approved another round of training to build the skills of drivers and mechanics across the state.
Sharing the results, the Director of Mechanical Engineering Services, Engr. Itimi Kingsley, reported that 29 students graduated with distinction, nine earned upper credit, 12 received lower credit, and one passed. Unfortunately, seven participants were unable to complete the course.
Speaking for his fellow graduates, the top student from Warri Centre, Mr. Aaron Ekarume, thanked the State Government and the Directorate of Transport for their support and dedication to the well-being of drivers.
The 2024/2025 graduation of Chief Drivers represents another important step in Delta’s ongoing effort to professionalize its public service and create a more skilled and motivated workforce.
