The Executive Chairman of the Delta State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), Hon. Samuel Oghenevwogaga Mariere, has reaffirmed his administration’s dedication to transparency, accountability, and a firm stance against corruption in the management of basic education throughout the state.
During an interactive session with stakeholders and journalists at the SUBEB headquarters in Asaba on Wednesday, August 20, 2025, Mariere rejected the allegations of kickbacks from contractors, calling them false and malicious.
He explained that contractors have openly stated that no money was ever requested by Board officials and also welcomed independent checks of SUBEB’s records and procedures.
Highlighting recent achievements, the SUBEB Chairman revealed that 90% of approved projects have been completed, including the construction of 162 new classrooms, renovation of 491 classrooms, and distribution of 16,800 pieces of classroom furniture.
He explained that these projects are helping to improve access to quality education and create better learning environments for students throughout Delta State.
Regarding teacher development, Mariere shared that 5,511 teachers received training last quarter in areas like digital literacy, teaching methods, leadership, and inclusive education—efforts he said are already making a positive difference in how lessons are delivered and how students perform.
He also highlighted SUBEB’s focus on digital education, mentioning the distribution of 1,843 tablets, 64 interactive boards, and more than 160,000 textbooks to schools. Additionally, he pointed to the Orogun SMART School as a leading example of technology-based learning aimed at equipping students with essential 21st-century skills.
Mariere added that SUBEB continues to prioritize classrooms, teachers, and student achievement, while emphasizing that the Board’s work is transparent and subject to public oversight and independent audits.
Recall that the SUBEB Chairman in a move aimed at revitalizing public primary education, inaugurated Local Education Authority School-Based Management Committees (SBMCs) across all 25 Local Government Areas of the state.
