Delta State Boosts Power Sector Drive with Inspection of Transcorp Ughelli Plant

As part of efforts to strengthen electricity supply and accelerate industrialization across Delta State, the Honourable Commissioner for Energy, Engr. Michael Anoka, on Wednesday, conducted an on-site assessment of Transcorp Power Plc’s facility along the Warri/Patani Expressway in Ughelli.

The visit, which aligns with Governor Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori’s MORE Agenda – focused on Meaningful Development, Opportunities for All, Realistic Reforms, and Enhanced Peace and Security – underscores the state’s determination to harness local energy assets for sustainable growth.

Accompanied by top officials, Commissioner Anoka held a detailed session and tour of the facility along with the management team, led by Managing Director/CEO Mr. Peter Ikenga.

The discussions centred on the plant’s operational status and potential for expanded contributions to the national grid and local consumption.

Transcorp Power Plc operates one of Nigeria’s largest gas-fired thermal plants, boasting an installed capacity of approximately 972MW.

However, current available capacity stands at around 120MW, highlighting ongoing challenges in full utilization amid grid constraints and other factors.

Commissioner Anoka expressed strong optimism that the recent Electricity Act would unlock new partnership opportunities between the state government, private operators like Transcorp Power, and other stakeholders.

Such collaborations, he noted, are essential to delivering reliable, affordable power to homes, industries, and businesses in Delta State.

“The inspection is part of our broader stakeholder engagement to evaluate power infrastructure and explore frameworks that maximize benefits for Deltans,” Anoka stated.

“With strategic investments and enabling policies, we can significantly boost energy capacity, drive economic activities, and position Delta as a hub for industrialization.”

He added that the engagement reflects the Oborevwori administration’s commitment to pragmatic reforms in the energy sector, ensuring that Delta leverages its abundant resources for shared prosperity and long-term development.
