Delta Targets Rural Connectivity with ₦8bn Uzere–Asaba–Ase Road

The Delta State Commissioner for Works (Highways and Urban Roads), Comrade Reuben Izeze, has stated that the ongoing reconstruction of the Uzere–Asaba–Ase Road, including its bridge components, reflects Governor Sheriff Oborevwori’s dedication to inclusive and balanced development across the state.

Izeze made the remarks on Tuesday while inspecting the project in Isoko South Local Government Area. He described the ₦8 billion project as a significant intervention designed to connect rural communities and improve the movement of residents and agricultural produce.

Accompanied by the Acting Permanent Secretary, Engr. Solomon Aghagba, and other senior ministry officials, the commissioner explained that the project was initiated in response to the difficulties faced by rural dwellers especially women who transport farm produce through challenging and often swampy terrain.

The project, which is over 60 percent complete, covers the replacement of damaged culverts and the rehabilitation of failed sections along the 4.35-kilometre road. It also involves the construction of a 100-span bridge, featuring an 80-metre main span and an additional 20-metre span across swampy areas.

Izeze revealed that the contractor recently encountered some technical issues and requested an on-site review to proceed in line with revised contract terms. After assessing the situation with the Acting Permanent Secretary, the Ministry directed the contractor to strictly adhere to the approved design, making it clear that no further changes would be entertained.

The commissioner also expressed concern over alleged attempts by a family in the area to obstruct the project. He called on them to cooperate with the authorities, noting that the construction company’s management would engage with the family, while the Local Government Chairman and Chief Security Officer had been informed.

A representative of the contracting firm, LEBTECH Construction Limited, Mr. Roni Karam, expressed confidence that the project would be completed by April 2027.

According to a project brief issued by the Ministry of Works’ Department of Highways in Asaba in February 2026, the original contract sums stand at ₦4,944,550,766.14 and ₦3,165,562,579.99. The contracts were awarded to LEBTECH Construction Limited on January 8, 2025.

The scope of work includes clearing unsuitable materials, filling with sharp sand, and laying boulders across a 1,300-metre stretch due to the swampy terrain, as well as applying layers of crushed stone. Additional components involve grassing for abutment protection, installation of relief culverts, crushed stone base construction, and rehabilitation of failed sections using a 50mm binder course.

So far, piling works, pile caps, and piers have been completed. Of the 35 required longitudinal beams, 32 have been finished. One abutment wall has been delivered, while casting of the second is still pending.

When completed, the project is expected to greatly enhance connectivity along the Uzere Asaba–Ase corridor, ease long-standing transportation challenges, stimulate economic activities, and improve the living conditions of residents in Isoko South and neighboring communities.
