Midnight fire razes market in Delta

Barely two weeks after Ogbe-Ijaw market in Warri Delta State was razed down by fire, shops at Mciver market, were razed down yesterday.

The fire started in the early hours of Monday morning, but the cause of the fire was yet-to-be identified, as witnesses alleged that it emanated from someone who left a burning fire unattended to.

The inferno resulted in the destruction of goods and property worth millions of naira, inflicting substantial losses on the affected traders in Warri.

Traders, who were affected by the fire incident lamented that all their lives’ savings were gone, especially in this dwindling economy. They called on the state government to come to their rescue and help rebuild the market.

However, the Executive Chairman of Warri south local government council, Dr Michael Tidi, confirming the incident, said he would set up a committee to look into the matter and that the committee’s findings will be made known to the press.

Tidi however warned against storing of inflammable substances in the market in order to forestall a reoccurrence of such an incident.
