Naira Marley Urges Youths to Shun Sports Betting

Popular Nigerian singer and rapper Azeez Fashola, widely known as Naira Marley, has issued a strong warning to Nigerian youths about the dangers of excessive sports betting, describing it as a financial trap and not a legitimate occupation.

Taking to his X handle on Sunday, September 14, 2025, the Tesumole crooner wrote:

“Football bet no be work bro. Please stop before they finish you.”

He further cautioned that relying on betting as a source of income is both unreliable and risky, urging young people to redirect their energy toward more sustainable ventures. “You are far too smart to be the only thing standing in your way,” he added in a follow-up post.

Naira Marley’s comments come amid growing concern over the rising popularity of sports betting among Nigerian youths. A recent report by Business Insider Africa ranked Nigeria as the top sports betting nation in Africa, with an estimated 168.7 million active bettors. The report also revealed that 70 percent of Nigerians aged 30 and under are engaged in betting activities.

Experts have warned that the normalization of gambling among young people could lead to financial instability, mental health challenges, and addiction. Despite the risks, betting platforms continue to thrive, often targeting youth through aggressive marketing and celebrity endorsements.

Naira Marley’s stance is particularly notable given his influence among Nigerian youth. His message has sparked widespread debate online, with many praising him for speaking out, while others questioned whether celebrities should take stronger action against gambling culture.

His warning adds to a growing call for greater awareness, regulation, and youth empowerment in Nigeria’s entertainment and financial sectors.
