Renowned Nigerian actress and filmmaker, Omoni Oboli, has made a striking assertion regarding Nigeria’s film industry, claiming that Nollywood generates more original content than Hollywood.
The 47-year-old Edo-born star, recognized for her critically acclaimed films like “The First Lady,” “Wives on Strike,” and “Love in Every Word,” expressed this viewpoint during a recent interview in the industry.
She contended that Nigerian filmmakers are consistently producing distinctive narratives, challenging the belief that Nollywood films are predictable.
She stated, “I believe that in this part of the world, we actually have more original stories than those outside of Nigeria. I would argue that Nollywood has more original tales than Hollywood.”

Oboli’s remarks come as Nollywood marks its 30th anniversary, having evolved from modest beginnings into a $6.4 billion industry that produces over 2,500 films each year.
Analysts in the industry note that this expansion aligns with the growing global appetite for genuine African narratives.
“Our films have significantly improved compared to the past. We’ve always had compelling stories, so storytelling has never really been an issue for us,” she remarked.
