Governor Sheriff Oborevwori has officially launched the 2025 edition of the Zenith Bank Delta Principal’s Cup, reaffirming his administration’s commitment to youth development and grassroots sports.
The flag-off ceremony, held Thursday at the Sports Pavilion of St. Patrick’s College, Asaba, was performed on the Governor’s behalf by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Dr. Kingsley Emu.
Speaking at the event, Governor Oborevwori underscored the significance of the Principal’s Cup beyond its role as a talent-hunting platform. According to him, the annual football competition provides an avenue for young athletes to cultivate vital life skills such as discipline, teamwork, resilience, fitness, and goal-setting—qualities he described as essential for personal and professional success.
The Governor also emphasized that the tournament goes beyond sports, serving as a unifying force in the state’s culturally diverse environment.
He noted that bringing students from different ethnic and social backgrounds together on the football field fosters mutual respect, tolerance, and friendship, which are necessary for peace and progress.
Oborevwori commended Zenith Bank Plc for sustaining its sponsorship of the competition, describing the partnership as a model of private sector support for government initiatives.
He assured that his administration would continue to create opportunities for young people to thrive, both in academics and extracurricular activities.
The Principal’s Cup, which has become one of the largest school sports competitions in the state, has over the years produced notable football talents who have gone on to excel at national and international levels.
This year’s edition is expected to feature hundreds of secondary schools across Delta State, with the finals scheduled for later in the year.
