Oborevwori Mourns Passing of Warri Diocese Bishop Emeritus Afareha

Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, has expressed condolences to the Catholic Diocese of Warri following the death of its Bishop Emeritus, Most Rev. John Okeoghene Afareha, who passed away at the age of 78.

In a condolence statement issued in Asaba and signed by his Chief Press Secretary, Sir Festus Ahon, the Governor described the late cleric as a respected servant of God whose life was marked by deep faith, humility, and selfless service to humanity, leaving a lasting impact on both the Church and society.

Governor Oborevwori said he was deeply saddened by the loss, noting that Bishop Afareha’s years of service as a priest and bishop were defined by strong spiritual values, simplicity in pastoral leadership, and an unwavering dedication to the growth of the Catholic Church, particularly within the Warri Diocese.

He described the late bishop as a fatherly figure, a devoted shepherd, and a man of profound prayer whose life reflected sacrifice, service, and obedience to God’s will. According to the Governor, his passing is a significant loss not only to the Catholic Church but also to Delta State and the wider human community.

The Governor extended his sympathies to the Catholic Bishop of Warri, Most Rev. Anthony Ovayero Ewherido, as well as to the clergy, religious, members of the diocese, and the family of the deceased. He prayed for God’s comfort and strength for them during this difficult period.

Governor Oborevwori also prayed for the repose of Bishop Afareha’s soul, asking God to grant him eternal rest and reward him for his lifetime of dedicated service to the Church and humanity.

Bishop Afareha was ordained a Catholic priest on December 30, 1973, and was consecrated as a bishop on May 14, 1997. The Catholic Diocese of Warri announced his passing with profound sorrow, expressing hope in the resurrection and commending his soul to God’s mercy.
