In a firm declaration on Tuesday, the Delta State Government sent a clear message of intolerance towards any disruptions to the prevailing peace within the state.
Speaking in Asaba, the Secretary to the State Government, Dr. Kingsley Emu, addressed the press following a visit to a victim injured during violent protests instigated by Okada riders.
Joined by key officials including the State Commissioner of Police, CP Abaniwonda Olufemi, and the State Commissioner for Information, Dr. Ifeanyi Osuoza, Dr. Emu outlined the government’s stance against recent disturbances.
Highlighting the challenges posed by banned Okada riders, Dr. Emu emphasized their involvement in criminal activities, including armed robbery, especially after curfew hours.
He recounted recent clashes between security forces and Okada riders, resulting in casualties on both sides and incidents of vandalism at public facilities.
Dr. Emu underscored the government’s commitment to safeguarding citizens and urged landlords to be vigilant about their tenants’ conduct. He emphasized the need for property registration and accountability.
In a separate statement, State Commissioner of Police Abaniwonda Olufemi condemned violent protests, asserting that while peaceful demonstrations are lawful, those marred by violence constitute criminal acts.
He reassured residents of safety measures implemented by security agencies to uphold law and order, urging the populace to carry on with their lawful activities without fear.
The government’s warning comes amidst escalating tensions, signaling a robust response to any threat to public tranquility within Delta State.
