Emotions ran high in Agbor on Monday as Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, performed the groundbreaking ceremony for the ₦59.7 billion Uromi Junction Flyover Project, a landmark infrastructure development aimed at easing traffic congestion and boosting economic activities in the state.
The project, which will be executed by Julius Berger Nigeria Plc, is strategically located at Uromi Junction in Agbor, Ika South Local Government Area, a critical point along the busy Lagos–Asaba Expressway. For years, the junction has been notorious for heavy traffic gridlock, frequent accidents, and delays affecting commuters, traders, and long-distance travelers.
The groundbreaking ceremony attracted a large turnout of government officials, traditional rulers, political leaders, and residents from across Delta State, turning the event into a major civic gathering.
Among the dignitaries present were the Deputy Governor of Delta State, Sir Monday Onyeme; Immediate Past Governor, Senator Ifeanyi Okowa; Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Emomotimi Guwor; as well as state and national lawmakers.
Also in attendance were the Dein of Agbor, His Royal Majesty Benjamin Ikenchukwu Keagborekuzi I; Chairman of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), Sir Chiedu Ebie; Chairman of Ika South Local Government Council, Engr. Jerry Ehiwarior, and several other prominent personalities.
Addressing the gathering, Governor Oborevwori described the Agbor flyover as a critical component of his administration’s infrastructure renewal drive, noting that the project reflects his commitment to delivering people-oriented development across the state.
The governor emphasized that the flyover would significantly reduce travel time, enhance road safety, and improve the movement of goods and services along one of the state’s busiest transport corridors.

He added that the project would also stimulate economic growth in Agbor and neighboring communities by improving access for businesses and investors.
Residents of Agbor and surrounding areas expressed visible excitement and gratitude, with many shedding tears of joy as construction officially commenced.
Community members described the project as a long-awaited solution to the persistent traffic challenges at Uromi Junction, which has for decades served as a major bottleneck for motorists traveling within Delta State and beyond.
The Uromi Junction Flyover Project is expected to feature modern engineering standards consistent with Julius Berger’s reputation for delivering high-quality infrastructure across Nigeria.
When completed, the flyover is projected to transform traffic flow in Ika South, reduce accident rates, and reinforce Delta State’s position as a key commercial hub in the South-South region.
With the flag-off now completed, construction activities are set to begin immediately, marking another significant milestone in Governor Oborevwori’s drive to modernize Delta State’s road infrastructure and improve the quality of life for its residents.
