Delta Sports Boss Onoriode Oborevwori Wins Nigeria–France Sports Award

The Executive Chairman of the Delta State Sports Commission, Onoriode Oborevwori, has been honoured with the Nigeria–France Sports Award for Sports Commissioner of the Year, a prestigious recognition that underscores Delta State’s sustained leadership in sports development and youth empowerment.

The award celebrates Delta’s consistent dominance in national sporting competitions and its strategic investments in grassroots talent discovery, modern infrastructure, and inclusive programs for both able-bodied and para-athletes across the state.

The achievement, observers note, is a direct reflection of Governor Sheriff Oborevwori’s visionary leadership, which continues to place youth development and sports excellence at the heart of the state’s progress agenda under the M.O.R.E. framework — Meaningful Development, Opportunities for All, Realistic Reforms, and Enhanced Peace and Security.

Under Onoriode Oborevwori’s stewardship, Delta State has not only maintained its record as Nigeria’s undisputed sports powerhouse but has also advanced initiatives that align with international standards in sports administration and athlete welfare.

From constructing world-class facilities to promoting female participation and supporting special athletes, the state’s inclusive sports ecosystem has become a national benchmark. Partnerships with global organizations, including collaborations with French sports institutions, have further expanded opportunities for Delta’s young athletes to compete and train internationally.

Speaking after receiving the award, Onoriode Oborevwori dedicated the honour to Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, describing him as “a leader whose vision for sports and youth empowerment has transformed Delta into a model of excellence.”

He affirmed that the recognition will inspire the Sports Commission to deepen its commitment to grassroots engagement, capacity building, and international exposure for young athletes.

Delta’s recognition on the Nigeria–France platform, stakeholders say, reaffirms the state’s role as a trailblazer in harnessing sports as a tool for unity, innovation, and sustainable development — a true embodiment of the Governor’s M.O.R.E. Agenda in action.
