Ex-Eagles Stars Urge Team to Recognize High Stakes

Super Eagles

A group of former Nigerian international players has come forward to rally behind the Super Eagles as they prepare for their 2026 World Cup qualifying matches against Rwanda and South Africa, amid increased criticism regarding the team’s disappointing start to the campaign.

Emmanuel Amuneke, the African Player of the Year in 1994, addressed the media on Monday, September 1st, highlighting the critical importance of the results against Rwanda and South Africa for the team’s World Cup aspirations.

He remarked, “Our primary aim is to achieve positive outcomes against Rwanda and South Africa. I hope they can secure victories; while we are not in the leading position yet, we possess the potential to perform well.”

He further stated, “The players must recognize the significance of these fixtures. A win, along with favorable outcomes in other group matches, will clarify our standing.”

Etim Esin, a past Nigerian playmaker, stressed the necessity of securing all points from both games, cautioning that failing to qualify would pose a serious issue, especially given the team’s talent.

He observed, “It is essential that we earn all six points from the matches against Rwanda and South Africa.”

He added, “With two elite African players like Lookman and Osimhen on our side, we cannot afford to miss the World Cup. This is their opportunity to unite and ensure our qualification.”

Missing out on back-to-back World Cups would be a significant setback. I wish them success. All they need are favorable results, and it’s achievable if these players collaborate effectively.”

Azubuike Egwuekwe, who was part of the squad that won AFCON in 2013, believes the current team is capable of triumphing in the necessary matches.

He expressed, “The final team is established; it continues to be the same group we are familiar with. With their talents, we can conquer both games if they give their best.”

Coach Eric Chelle has already stated his intention to silence the critics, telling Nigerian journalist Osasu Obayiuwana, who is based in the UK, “People have already counted us out. However, I am unfazed. I am confident we can astonish many.”

The Eagles are set to face Rwanda in Uyo on September 6th before heading to Bloemfontein.
