The Nigerian Communications Satellite Limited (NIGCOMSAT) has reiterated its commitment to leveraging satellite technology to strengthen national security, improve disaster response, and expand rural connectivity in line with Nigeria’s digital transformation agenda.
Speaking at a one-day media training for ICT reporters and editors held at the NIGCOMSAT Ground Control Station in Abuja on Monday, the Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer, Mrs. Jane Nkechi Egerton-Idehen, underscored the central role of satellites in modern society. She was represented by the Executive Director of Technical Services, Engr. Abiodun Attah.
Egerton-Idehen noted that satellite infrastructure today drives critical services, from powering internet access in underserved communities to enabling accurate weather forecasting and bolstering national security operations.
“We live in a digital age where satellites and ICT are no longer abstract or futuristic. They are part of our daily life. ICT is the nervous system of our society, driving communication, education, healthcare, commerce, and governance,” she said.
She also emphasized the importance of the media in demystifying complex technologies, explaining that journalists have a duty to shape public understanding, influence policy response, and inspire future generations to embrace careers in technology and space.

The training featured discussions on the differences between geostationary and low-earth orbit satellites, the role of ICT in rural development, and frameworks guiding Nigeria’s digital economy.
Egerton-Idehen highlighted Nigeria’s progress as not only a consumer but also a contributor to global technology through its satellite systems, ICT infrastructure, and startup ecosystem. She urged journalists to spotlight stories of impact, including rural communities accessing the internet for the first time and young Nigerian engineers building globally relevant innovations.
“At NIGCOMSAT, we are committed to supporting you on this journey because we know that informed journalism creates informed citizens, and that’s the foundation of a strong digital economy,” she added.
The session brought together ICT reporters, editors, and media practitioners who engaged with NIGCOMSAT experts on strategies for effectively communicating the role of technology in national development.
