Members of the Nigerian Union of Teachers (NUT), Ughelli South Chapter in Delta State, had a close brush with death on Sunday evening while returning from the Teachers’ Day celebration in Asaba. Four of them are currently in critical condition at the hospital.
An eyewitness reported that the accident occurred in Akiowhe Community when the driver, speeding at the time, tried to overtake a moving truck.
“The accident could have been avoided if the driver had been more cautious, especially since it was raining heavily that day. He was speeding when he tried to overtake a truck and ended up crashing into it from behind.
“Around ten teachers sustained injuries, but four were in critical condition. The driver also broke his thigh in the crash. One of the victims was unconscious and had to be revived with the help of local residents and passersby who rushed to the scene.
“The front of the bus and its engine were severely damaged, and the front door had to be broken open before the passenger in the front seat could be rescued. They were really lucky,” the eyewitness said.
Two of the victims, speaking from their hospital beds, expressed deep gratitude to God for sparing their lives. They also appreciated Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori for showing concern and sending officials to check on them.
“The Governor sent three Commissioners, the PPEB Chairman, and several others to visit us and make sure we’re getting proper care.
“We’re just thankful to be alive. We honestly thought we weren’t going to make it, but it was truly a miraculous escape,” they shared.
As of the time of this report, four of the victims, including the driver, are still receiving intensive treatment at the hospital.
