Member of the Delta State House of Assembly representing Ughelli North Constituency 1, Omonade Matthew, has revealed that he co-sponsored a bill aimed at scrapping the outdated Rent Control Law of 1977 and replacing it with a more modern tenancy framework in the state.
Sharing the update on Wednesday, Omonade said the proposed bill titled the Landlord and Tenant Law of Delta State, 2025 is intended to tackle ongoing challenges in the housing sector, such as arbitrary rent hikes and the activities of exploitative agents.
He explained that once passed, the law will protect tenants from unfair treatment while also ensuring that landlords are not taken advantage of by dishonest tenants or unprofessional middlemen.
According to the lawmaker, the goal is to establish a fair and balanced system that works for everyone involved in rental agreements. He described the bill as a significant move toward justice and fairness, adding that it reflects the Assembly’s commitment to protecting vulnerable residents and promoting responsible tenancy practices.
Omonade also noted that the proposal aligns with the legislative priorities of the 8th Assembly, led by Emomotimi Guwor, which focuses on reforms aimed at improving the welfare of citizens.
If enacted, the bill is expected to create a more structured and equitable relationship between landlords and tenants across Delta State.
