Athletes, residents, and cultural enthusiasts gathered for the 13th edition of the 3.5 kilometers Kutu Marathon, an annual sporting event that has become a unifying force in Iriama community.
The marathon, which attracted participants from within and outside the community, saw 16 runners take on the 3.5km stretch amid cheers from excited spectators lining the route.
Pre-tournament favorite and record holder, Stephen Apochi raced to victory, clocking a time of 14:48 secs, to clinch his 10th Kutu championship trophy, with Anderson Kupa and Sunday finishing 2nd and 3rd respectively with a time of 17:32 secs and 19:29 seconds.
The event was not just about athletics, but also a celebration of culture and togetherness as the day featured vibrant traditional dance displays, music, and other side attractions that showcased the rich heritage of Iriama.
Elders, youths, and visitors alike were treated to performances that highlighted the community’s pride in its cultural identity.

Speaking at the event, the Sponsor of the Kutu Marathon event, Okakuro Samson Akporotu represented by the Chairman of the day, Chief Henry Ojanikene, the LOC Chairman, Mr Johnbull Akporotu, described the marathon as more than just a competition, stressing that it serves to promote fitness, youth engagement, and community development.
Winners in various categories received prizes and recognition, just as they commended the sponsor of the event, Okakuro Samson Akporotu, for his efforts in sustaining the event.
With its blend of sports and tradition, the Kutu Marathon has continued to grow in popularity, firmly establishing itself as a hallmark of unity and cultural pride in Iriama community.
