Delta Govt, NEMA Deliver Relief Materials to Rainstorm Victims in Okpe Communities

The Delta State Government, in collaboration with the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), has extended relief support to residents of Ughoton, Ugbokodo, and Jeddo communities in Okpe Local Government Area who were severely affected by the April 15 rainstorm.

Speaking during the distribution exercise on Friday, Commissioner for Special Duties, Hon. Ejiro Etacherure, who represented Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, said the intervention demonstrates the administration’s determination to respond promptly to natural disasters and assist affected families in rebuilding their lives.

He disclosed that Governor Oborevwori had also approved additional financial support to cushion the impact on victims, many of whom lost homes and livelihoods in the storm that displaced more than 400 households and caused damage running into millions of naira.

The relief package, jointly provided by the state government and NEMA, consisted of essential food items such as bags of rice, garri, groundnut oil, salt, spaghetti, macaroni, and seasoning cubes.

Etacherure emphasized that strict accountability measures were in place to ensure the items reached the most vulnerable residents.

Community representatives, who witnessed the distribution, expressed gratitude for the intervention, describing it as timely and reassuring in the face of their losses. They noted that the assistance would bring immediate relief while they work toward long-term recovery.

Officials from NEMA also commended the Delta State Government for its swift collaboration and proactive disaster response strategy, stressing the importance of sustained partnership between state and federal agencies in tackling emergencies.

The exercise reaffirms the state’s commitment under Governor Oborevwori’s MORE Agenda, which prioritizes social welfare, resilience building, and protection of vulnerable groups during unforeseen crises.
