Delta State House of Assembly to Convene Special Joint Session With Former Lawmakers in Asaba

The Delta State House of Assembly has announced plans to host a special three-day joint session involving current legislators and former members of the Assembly, in a move designed to strengthen legislative continuity, deepen institutional memory, and enhance governance effectiveness across the state.

The session is scheduled to take place from Wednesday, November 12 to Friday, November 14 in Asaba, the state capital.

Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Emomotimi Dennis Guwor, disclosed the development during plenary, stating that the gathering will serve as a platform for knowledge exchange, mentorship, and collaboration between the present Assembly and its predecessors. According to him, the parley aims to harness the experience of past lawmakers—particularly those who have gone on to occupy leadership roles, including Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, a former Speaker of the Assembly.

The special session is expected to feature notable former Speakers such as Rt. Hon. Emmanuel Okoro, Rt. Hon. Kent Omatsone, Rt. Hon. Martins Okonta, Rt. Hon. Victor Ochei, Rt. Hon. Monday Igbuya, Rt. Hon. Basil Ganagana, Rt. Hon. Frank Enekorogha, Rt. Hon. Peter Onwusanya, and Rt. Hon. Olise Imegwu. Their involvement is anticipated to provide historical context, legislative best practices, and strategic perspectives that can guide the House in addressing contemporary governance challenges.

To coordinate the event, Speaker Guwor has constituted a five-member organizing committee chaired by the Deputy Speaker, Rt. Hon. Arthur Akpowowo. Other members include Hon. Austin Uroye, Hon. Perkins Umukoro, Hon. Festus Utuama, and Hon. Bridget Anyafulu, with the Deputy Clerk (Administration), Mr. Smart Edoge, serving as secretary.

Chief Press Secretary to the Speaker, Mr. Nkem Nwaeke, described the initiative as innovative and forward-looking, highlighting its potential to reinforce unity within the political institution and advance legislative development in Delta State. He emphasized that the collaboration will support informed decision-making, foster stability in governance, and enhance the Assembly’s role in promoting peace, progress, and socio-economic growth across the state.
