FG Orders Withdrawal of Passports from Nigerians Who Renounce Citizenship

The Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, has instructed the Nigeria Immigration Service to recall and deactivate passports belonging to individuals who have officially renounced their Nigerian citizenship.

This was disclosed in a statement by his Special Adviser on Media, Babatunde Alao, who noted that the directive affects only those whose renunciation has been formally approved by the President.

Tunji-Ojo explained that, in line with the Constitution, anyone who gives up their Nigerian citizenship is no longer recognised as a citizen and therefore cannot retain national documents such as passports.

He added that the decision is part of broader reforms to protect the credibility of Nigerian citizenship and curb identity-related fraud.

According to him, the government is also committed to strengthening systems that enhance border security while ensuring smooth and lawful travel.
