Asagba of Asaba Urges Accountants to Uphold Integrity

Accounting professionals in Nigeria have been urged to uphold the highest ethical standards of their profession, which emphasize integrity, transparency, and accountability at all times. The charge was given by the Asagba of Asaba, His Royal Majesty, Prof. Epiphany Azinge, when a delegation from the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN), Asaba and District Society, paid him a courtesy visit at his palace.

The monarch observed that the accounting profession comes with strong temptations and therefore requires discipline and firm character to avoid unethical practices. He stressed that accountants must remain above reproach, noting that their conduct should be beyond question at all times. He described accountants as members of a long-established and highly respected profession who, by virtue of their training, are expected to serve the nation with dedication and integrity. He added that renowned accountants of the past were seen not only as role models but also as figures who inspired others to pursue the profession.

In his remarks, the Chairman of ICAN Asaba and District Society, Akiri Ogheneriobororue, said the visit was to celebrate the Asagba’s achievements and to reaffirm the Institute’s commitment to working closely with him.

Akiri explained that ICAN, Nigeria’s leading professional accounting body, was established by law to promote excellence in accounting, finance, and management. He outlined the Institute’s responsibilities to include regulating the accounting profession in Nigeria, setting professional standards, issuing certifications, and providing continuous training and development for its members.

He further noted that ICAN has a membership strength of over 60,000 professionals across Nigeria and around the world, and is affiliated with several international professional bodies to encourage global collaboration, adopt best practices, and enhance the professional growth of its members.
