Warri Stadium Project: Gov Oborevwori Fumes as Deadline Is Missed

Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, has strongly criticized the contractors in charge of reconstructing Warri Stadium, expressing frustration over delays and warning against substandard work.

During a site inspection in Warri, the governor stressed that both deadlines and quality standards must be strictly met. Clearly unhappy, he pointed out that the project, originally scheduled for completion in December, is still unfinished months later.

He emphasized that the government paid for durable, high-quality work not materials that would deteriorate quickly adding that any temporary fittings would be removed and replaced with lasting solutions.

Oborevwori identified the contractor as Peculiar Consults and issued a firm warning that failure to deliver as agreed could lead to public exposure. He also urged journalists and the public to help hold the contractor accountable, reinforcing his administration’s zero-tolerance stance on poor execution.

Explaining why the government chose to renovate rather than build a new stadium, he cited limited land, the importance of preserving the stadium’s legacy, and the need to avoid displacing nearby residents. He noted that plans to relocate surrounding communities were intentionally dropped to protect people’s livelihoods.

Despite the setbacks, the governor expressed confidence that the upgraded stadium will soon be ready to host major sporting events. He also revealed plans to renovate the Stephen Keshi Stadium after this project is completed, as part of broader efforts to improve sports infrastructure across the state.

Meanwhile, Ibrahim Gusau, president of the Nigeria Football Federation, praised the governor’s commitment. He commended the quality of the pitch, noting it meets modern football standards, though he suggested the stadium might not be ready for matches until September. He added that the Super Eagles could potentially play their first official match there once it is completed.

Also speaking, Phillip Shaibu described the pitch as outstanding, saying the project demonstrates a strong commitment to sports development in Delta State.
