Onyeme’s Scholarship Scheme Not a Political Tool – Egugbo

The Senior Special Assistant to the Governor of Delta State, Comrade Fidelis Egugbo, has said that the Light Up Ndokwa group is intentionally targeting Deputy Governor Sir Monday Onyeme, FCA, and by extension, Governor Sheriff Oborevwori’s government.

In a personal statement released on Tuesday in Asaba, Egugbo claimed the group’s actions are similar to those of an opposition party, especially in their criticism of Onyeme’s annual scholarship program.

Speaking about a news report titled “Criticism Trails N150 Million Deputy Governor, Monday Onyeme’s Scholarship Scheme in Ndokwa Nation,” Egugbo said the report is misleading and based on incorrect information.
He explained that the scholarship program has been running for nine years and covers the entire Delta North Senatorial District, not just Ndokwa land.

“For the 2025 edition, 683 students passed the aptitude test, with 308 of them from the Ndokwa/Ukwuani Federal Constituency,” Egugbo said, stressing that the program helps ease the financial burden on parents and students in Delta North.

He denied Light Up Ndokwa’s claim that Onyeme was using people’s money for political gain, saying the scholarship is funded not only by the Deputy Governor but also by donations from individuals, companies, and NGOs.

Egugbo warned that the group might face legal consequences for spreading false information, pointing out that respected education officials, teachers, and directors from the Delta State Ministry of Education are involved in the scholarship process.

He also clarified that Onyeme does not give out contracts or manage state infrastructure projects, emphasizing that his duties are clearly defined by Governor Oborevwori, who chose him as running mate in 2023 due to his proven work.

Egugbo urged the people of Ndokwa and the broader Delta State community to ignore the group’s claims and continue supporting the Oborevwori administration, which he said is committed to providing good governance.
