Delta Govt Moves to Transform Healthcare Access

The Delta State Contributory Health Commission (DSCHC) is making a major move to improve healthcare delivery and expand access for residents enrolled in the state’s health insurance scheme by setting up Health Insurance Units (HIUs) in key hospitals across the state.

The Director-General of the Commission, Dr. Isaac Akpoveta, explained that these units will serve as the first point of contact for all enrollees under the Delta State Contributory Health Insurance Scheme (DSCHIS), ensuring that health coverage translates into quick, convenient, and quality medical care.

According to him, the HIUs will handle patient verification, initial consultations, basic primary healthcare services, and essential health education making hospital visits smoother and more efficient.

As part of the initiative, DSCHC officials recently visited the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Asaba, and the General Hospital, Okwe, to discuss implementation plans and assess the readiness of the hospitals to host the new units.

Dr. Akpoveta described the project as a key reform to improve coordination and efficiency in the state’s healthcare system. By managing verification and basic care within hospitals, the units will help reduce unnecessary referrals, ease patient flow, and shorten waiting times.

He stressed that the goal is not just efficiency but also trust. “The Health Insurance Units will make sure every enrollee enjoys smooth, uninterrupted access to care from registration to treatment,” he said.

Dr. Akpoveta added that the establishment of the HIUs underscores the Delta State Government’s strong commitment to achieving Universal Health Coverage (UHC) and realizing its vision of ‘Health for All Deltans.’
