The Delta State Government has commended the State Commissioner of Police, Aina Adesola, and his team for intercepting 1,520 packs of illicit drugs, including Tramadol and Swinol tablets, along the Asaba–Agbor Expressway.
The drugs were reportedly concealed beneath company machines in a J5 bus before being discovered by operatives during a strategic operation.
Director-General of the Delta State Bureau for Orientation and Communications, Dr. Barr. Fred Latimore Oghenesivbe, in a statement in Asaba, described the interception and the arrest of the suspected drug baron, Mr. Peter Etim Akpan, alongside the truck driver, Mr. Ebuka Dominion, and the motor boy, Mr. Emmanuel Terdule, as a clear demonstration of the Delta State Police Command’s commitment to combating drug trafficking.
He noted that under CP Adesola’s leadership, the Command has continued to collaborate with key stakeholders and relevant government agencies to dismantle drug trafficking networks operating within and around the state.
Oghenesivbe expressed concern over the rising incidence of drug trafficking and abuse, attributing it to growing demand among criminal elements and individuals struggling with substance dependence.
He assured that the state government would intensify efforts to ensure that drug traffickers, street hawkers, and middlemen are apprehended and prosecuted in collaboration with the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).
According to him, substance abuse, particularly hard drugs remains a major driver of criminal activities and social vices, including robbery, rape, prostitution, internet fraud (popularly known as “Yahoo-Yahoo”), and other forms of criminality.
He further disclosed that the War Against Drug Abuse (WADA) campaign would be sustained across the state in partnership with the NDLEA, the State Police Command, and stakeholders in tertiary institutions and colleges. The NDLEA, he added, has continued to establish WADA clubs in schools across the three senatorial districts of Delta State.
The Bureau Chief also revealed that the State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, remains firmly committed to his administration’s Drug-Free Delta (DFD) Campaign and has approved the commencement of Phase Two of the initiative in tertiary institutions and colleges across Delta Central, Delta North, and Delta South.
The state government called on parents and guardians to embrace responsible parenting by instilling moral discipline and self-esteem in their children, stressing that such values are essential for raising responsible future leaders.
Oghenesivbe commended CP Adesola, the Eagle-Net Squad Commander, and their team for what he described as exemplary intelligence gathering and strategic operations.
He also lauded Governor Oborevwori for the administration’s substantial investments in operational logistics, equipment, and vehicles to enhance the effectiveness of security agencies in the state.
