Delta Government Slashes Dialysis Fees, Expands Healthcare Reforms

The Delta State Government has unveiled sweeping reforms in the health sector, aimed at easing patient burdens, upgrading facilities, and improving service delivery across the state.

Commissioner for Health, Dr. Joseph Onojaeme, announced on Tuesday on a live television programme “Politics in Perspective” that dialysis costs in state-owned hospitals will be reduced from ₦70,000 to ₦45,000 following Governor Sheriff Oborevwori’s approval for the procurement of eight new dialyzers.

He added that recent investments in MRI and CT scan machines will enable residents to access advanced medical diagnosis without travelling long distances.

Onojaeme further disclosed that more than 150 Primary Health Centres (PHCs) across the three senatorial districts will undergo renovations.

Presently, Delta has three tertiary hospitals, 65 general hospitals, and 441 PHCs, many of which are being remodelled to strengthen service delivery.

The Commissioner highlighted the success of the state’s free maternal healthcare programme, which has reduced maternal mortality from 350 to 120 deaths per 100,000 live births. To boost efficiency, all government hospitals have now been authorised to retain and utilise 100 percent of their Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) for operational needs.

On the contributory health scheme, Onojaeme confirmed that several reforms had been introduced, with erring medical staff sanctioned or demoted for sabotaging government’s efforts.

He also stressed that surveillance under the Drug Revolving Fund remains active to prevent fake and adulterated drugs from entering state facilities.

“These reforms reflect Governor Oborevwori’s unwavering commitment to ensuring that no Deltan is left behind in accessing quality healthcare. From slashing treatment costs to remodelling facilities and safeguarding drug supply, we are building a stronger, more inclusive health system,” Onojaeme stated.

The government assured residents that these initiatives are part of its long-term strategy to deliver sustainable, people-centered healthcare across Delta State.
