Chairman of Ughelli South Local Government, Dr Lucky Avweromre has commenced massive construction of drainages at the Otokutu market.
Speaking during the inspection of the project, Dr Avweromre said it is part of the council’s efforts aimed at combating incessant flooding and stemming the menace of devastating erosion bedevilling the market, which has impeded commercial activities at the market.
According to the Chairman of Ughelli South Local Government, Dr Avweromre, Otokutu market has been in a bad state and a concern for his administration.
Dr Avweromre said the concerns prompted him to swing into action to salvage the situation.
The Council boss, represented by his Supervisor for Works and Transportation, Sir Sunday Mrakpor, tasked the market women to imbibe maintenance culture to ensure environmental hygiene befitting of a modern market, especially now that the market is being kept in proper condition.
Speaking to newsmen, the chairman of the Otokutu Market Committee, Comrade Philip Ukpokoha, popularly called Coach Phillip, expressed delight at the construction work, stressing that the ongoing work, when completed, would enhance commercial activities of the market, thereby improving the socio-economic conditions of traders.

One of the market women who spoke, Mrs Voke Esanjumi, on behalf of others, expressed delight at the work being carried out by the council chairman, stressing that it was a great relief to them.
She added that, over the years, once it was raining season, customers found it extremely difficult to access their stores, but expressed gratitude to Governor Sheriff Oborevwori and the Dr Avweromre-led government for seeing their plight by fixing the market for them at the time it mattered most.
Also commending the council chairman, Mr Edirin Ojays, an APC chieftain, who hails from the area, expressed satisfaction at the ongoing construction, noting that Dr Avweromre’s administration has wiped the tears of the people.
Other basic works that are currently ongoing in the market are sand filling, total overhauling of the toilet system, provision of borehole water, and other maintenance work.
